Maddie + Chris

How did you meet?

Chris and I met in 8th-grade civics class. He and my brother played on the same hockey team and we bonded over our love of the sport. He was so kind and had such a big heart, even as a middle schooler. We’ve been together 12 years since then!

When did you know they were the one?

We attended different colleges in separate states and did long-distance for four years. Though we had separate friends and lives, I kept realizing that he was the first person I thought of when I wanted to share something good, something funny, something mundane, or even something bad. He made the good days better and the bad days easier. That’s when I knew he was my one.

What are your three favourite attributes of your partner?

Chris is a pediatric nurse, and his huge heart has always been what drew me to him. He’s a natural caretaker and makes others feel safe when he’s around. I love his sense of humor and his consistency. He’s my best partner and friend.

Who proposed and how?

Chris proposed a cold December evening in Washington, DC, in front of the Lincoln Memorial – where he’d first decided to move to DC to be with me four years earlier. Because of the cold, the memorial was empty, so we had the whole place to ourselves, which made the night even more intimate and special.

Where did you fall in love with your dress and why?

I fell in love with MWL Remi at Lovely Bride DC in Georgetown. Remi has the most gorgeous, unique floral lace that I immediately loved. And the long train! She fit like a glove and made me feel like a bride the second I put her on.

What was the best moment for you at your wedding?

Our ceremony. My dad was our officiant and struck the perfect balance of emotional, funny, and sweet. He had everyone (including himself) in tears. Chris and I exchanged personal vows and there was something so special about declaring our love so intimately in front of all of the people we love most. It set the tone for the whole day.

What advice would you tell other brides?

Remember that the day is about you! Choose vendors, decor, and events that reflect the two of you as a couple. It makes the day so much more personal and brings an authenticity that your guests can feel.
