Brooke + Oli

How did you meet?

My husband (Oli) and I met at an 18th birthday party in high school. Although we had crossed paths throughout school, we were never introduced to each other and hadn’t had a conversation until this party. A few weeks later, we started messaging and become inseparable. We studied for the HSC together and when that was done, Oli “unofficially” (it just sort of happened) moved into my parents house – just a month after we started dating! Luckily, my parents loved Oli so they were happy to have him live with us.

When did you know they were the one?

Looking back, I don’t think there was one moment where I knew I was going to marry Oli. He was always just my person and someone I didn’t want to live life without.

What are your three favourite attributes of your partner?

It’s hard to choose just three things I love about Oli but if I had to pick, it would be his generosity, work ethic and sense of family. Those that know Oli, know that he is such a special person that puts everyone above himself. He works extremely hard and has a work ethic like no other. But what I love most is his sense of family. He would do anything for his family and treats my siblings, parents and grandparents like his own. It has been so special to watch him bond with my favourite people.

Who proposed and how?

Oli proposed on 31st October 2020 on Shark Island in Sydney Harbour.

For those that don’t know my husband… Oli can’t keep a secret. He gets too excited and has to tell everyone his plan or the present he’s getting them (something I love about him and also do myself haha). This was very much the same for his proposal. He told me that we have three important weekends coming up where a proposal might be happening (yes – he told me the proposal was coming haha). The first weekend he took me to a nice restaurant for lunch – no proposal. The second weekend he didn’t tell me where we were going so I had an inkling that this was going to be THE day. The night before, I was putting away our clothes into the wardrobe and picked up a jacket of his that had fallen off the clothes hanger. I accidentally felt a ring box and quickly put the jacket back on the floor so he didn’t know that I knew he had a ring. I didn’t have a look at the ring as I wanted to keep it a surprise.

The next morning, he took that same jacket with him so I knew today was the day! His sister picked us up and dropped us off at Palm Beach where we waited – to my surprise – for a seaplane! The weather was absolutely terrible and was in-between rain, thunder and lightening all day (poor Oli was very stressed and checking his weather app every few minutes). Luckily, the weather held off with just enough time for us to fly over to Rose Bay. When we got off the sea plane, we were picked up by a private boat that dropped us off at Shark Island with a picnic basket. We walked across the island to find a picnic spot which is where I saw a picnic already set up, Champagne ready and a heap of roses. I instantly started crying – even though I knew that the proposal was coming.

Oli got down on one knee and proposed with the most beautiful ring. The two photographers that were hiding, capturing the moment, came out from hiding and we popped the Champagne! Just after we captured some photos, a huge storm came so we had to run in the rain to cover. It was the most perfect timing in-between the storm.

After some more champagne and food, we got back on the seaplane to Palm Beach. Oli had organised a dinner with all of our family at Jonahs restaurant which is were we celebrated the rest of the night! It was truely perfect and everything I had ever dreamed of.

Where did you fall in love with your dress and why?

My sister got married a year before me in March 2021 and wore the most beautiful Made with Love dress. From the moment she found her dress, I knew that I would find my dream dress at Made with Love.

A few months after I got engaged, Made with Love shared their new dress – Harlow – on social media. I instantly fell in love with the dress as it had the most beautiful 3D details, long train and low back. I loved the scooped neck line and how the train was longer than usual.

I only had the one dress in mind (Harlow) and didn’t have any back up options. From my first appointment with Made with Love, I tried on three dresses (mostly because my sister wanted me to) but fell in love with the Harlow dress straight away. It was the only dress I had screenshot on my phone and I’m so glad I chose to wore it on my big day!

What was the best moment for you at your wedding?

The ceremony was everything we had ever dreamed of. From the flowers, to the weather, to the set up, it was a dream come true. It was the moment that Oli and I got to share our vows and celebrate our relationship. We were also very grateful to have been married by one of our best mates (and groomsman) who did his celebrant course to be able to marry us on our special day.

What were your favourite details?

Everything! We loved our styling, flowers, suits, dresses, cake, signage, transport and the venue. We did have a lot of compliments on our flowers, transport and of course, our suits and dresses.

What advice would you tell other brides?

Breathe. Enjoy the day and don’t stress about the little things.

During the night, grab your partner and enjoy a drink together away from your guests. The day goes so fast so make sure you cherish the little moments you have alone with your partner.

Invest in a photographer and videographer. We don’t remember much of the day and have loved watching our wedding video (almost daily) and looking back at our photos.

Surprise your guests with your wedding venue! We told our guests that we were getting married in Byron Bay and didn’t tell them the name of the actual venue. We asked all our guests to meet at Byron Bay Surf Club and we surprised them in an old-school double decker red bus (named the ‘love bus’) and drove them to the venue. They had no idea where they were going and it just added to the experience and gave them something unexpected to look forward to.
